ՓՆՏՐԵԼ       #13 (114) / Դեկտեմբեր 2009   Ararat GOMTSYAN LEARNING LESSONS FROM THE CRISIS (SOME PECULIARITIES OF ARMENIA’S FOREIGN TRADE AGAINST THE BACKDROP OF GLOBAL ECONOMIC CRISIS) Finance and economic crisis had a significant impact on Armenia and IMF forecast GDP decline in Armenia for 2009 at 15 percent. Countries with export-oriented economies undergo the crisis considerably easily. Unfortunately, before the beginning of the crisis Armenia did not manage to re-orient its economy from importer to net exporter because of actual transport blockade, in addition to other reasons. Development of export from Armenia and volume expansion requires diversification of the consumer markets. The crisis always enabled an opportunity to re-interpret the past track, analyze the mistakes and develop new directions of development. Certainly, opening of border with Turkey and full scale usage of foreign trade opportunity will be a right step in export diversification. It is important to conduct complex marketing surveys regarding Armenian goods consumption in potential foreign markets. Since Armenia faces a challenge of limited natural resources it is expedient §to position¦ Armenian goods as exclusive. In that respect ecologically pure food, dried fruit, milk and meat products, and jewelry are particularly prospective. In addition, diversification of Armenian products, export should be a primary direction for the Armenian diplomats, activity. Today efforts are made in diplomatic circles to involve Armenian producers and companies in huge construction projects carried out in the South of Russia. In particular, in 2008 the growth of Armenia,s exports index to Southern Federal District of Russia has exceeded average Russian index by 25 percent.
